Paintings provide once and future spaces to linger as opportunities for contemplation. Paintings are like ghosts: They hover in time, space, reference, and surroundings. They attract viewers and haunt them through excluded information. They create attachments and invite friendships, which are enriched as we return to them, physically and in memory.

I work from various beginnings, usually small pencil line drawings, sometimes of things, but more often forces. Those beginnings form a field upon which oil and acrylic paint are applied in an expanding range of technical, cognitive, and sensual responses. My task is to develop a conversation with the work that recurs but feels newly formed. Throughout their development, my histories, readings, impulses, and the pulse of the times stimulate improvisation. When complete, the works are ready to be reinterpreted by their beholders.

You can find more of John’s work at FRIEDA at 320 Walnut Street or check his website.
