“Indigenous Peoples: Storytelling and Art in the uncovering and advancement of Truth and Justice.”

FRIEDAcommunity is honored to host Mabel Negrete (CNS), co-Founder of Indigenous Peoples’ Day (IPD) Philly, Eugene Black Crow Sr., Katherine Bahena-Benitez and Nachi Conde-Farley to discuss the importance of storytelling and art in the uncovering and advancement of truth and justice.

Eugene Black Crow Sr. is an Oglala Lakota of the Oglala Sioux Tribe in Pine Ridge reservation, South Dakota. He is the founder and director of the Lakhota Woglakapo Project which provides free tutoring lessons to Lakhota community members in order to preserve their language. He is descended from the Black Crow Thiwáhe (paternal family) and a Feather Earrings from his maternal Thiwáhe (family). He is also a boarding school survivor and is therefore a Lakhotiya zuyá (Lakota Language warrior). He is also a mocassin maker and artisan, and he serves as advisor for Indigenous Peoples’ Day Philly, Inc. He currently lives in Philadelphia.

Mabel Negrete (CNS) is Native Chilean of Picunche-Inca Heritage who migrated to Turtle Island over 35 years ago. She is the co-founder of Indigenous Peoples’ Day Philly, Inc and serves as the Executive Director and Chair of the Board. She is also an artist, activist, educator and entrepreneur. As an artist, she is known as CNS or the Counter Narrative Society (CNS) | Studio CNS which is a transdisciplinary artist-activist unit that focuses on decolonization, building community and the abolition of the Invisible Punishing Machine. CNS has founded SPARKmakers LLC, and co-founded the Indigenous 215 Collective, The Mobile Futures Institute and other social initiatives. CNS holds a Bachelor of Fine Art from the San Francisco Art Institute and a Master of Science in Art, Culture and Technology from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

IPD Philly Our mission is to cultivate an active Native American/Indigenous presence in the city of Philadelphia through cultural, educational and community-building initiatives that uplift our Native traditions, creative economies, and histories.

Nachi Conde-Farley volunteers with NYC Migrant Solidarity, which organizes networks of mutual aid among recently arrived migrants, including supply distributions, community dinners, and other events. Her involvement with this project is predicated upon her existence as an Indigenous person. Like her Maya ancestors and relatives who resisted colonial violence, NYC Migrant Solidarity continues to volunteer time, creativity, and love for our community during times of crisis, such as that currently being inflicted at the border and in cities like Chicago and New York.

Katherine Bahena-Benitez (They/Them/She) is a Queer Mexican Indigenous actor, poet, playwright, director, and model. They have received fellowships from The Miranda
Family Fellowship and LORT (League of Resident Theatres), both in NYC. Katherine has also been an EmergeNYC artist and recipient of the John Cauble Emerging Arts Leader Award. This fall, Katherine is part of the Professional Development Program with SDCF (Stage Directors and Choreographers Foundation for Emerging Directors) NYC.
Katherine says, “Con mucho amor y cariño, I do this for our gente, I do this for us. Aquí estamos.”
