FRIEDA recognized that the community would benefit from an uplifting, creative collaboration during quarantine, so every step of this project was designed to bring people together in a safe way.

Since March 2020, over 60 community members have contributed from home by cutting out more than
20,000 pixelated blue butterflies from card stock.

With detailed procedures to ensure safety, FRIEDA mailed, delivered, or prepared packets containing the printed sheets for pickup. A diverse group of people came together from all over the city - South Philly to Mount Airy and the surrounding suburbs - to help complete this fun project.

Some butterflies were even mailed from Europe, Canada and Australia!
Transformation
“Blue as a Butterfly” uses butterflies
- especially rare blue ones -
as symbols of transformation, renewal, freedom, and luck to capture the essence of FRIEDA.
Neighbors and participants have witnessed the progress of the project on their daily walks in the area.

“Blue as a Butterfly” was the idea of Gay Walling (artist and member of the FRIEDA community) and Thomas Steinborn (FRIEDA’s co-owner), who have successfully found engaging ways to keep FRIEDA’s constituents connected from the beginning of the pandemic.

A special Thank you to Heather Steiner (member of the FRIEDA community) for all your hard work!

Thank you to all who have helped and continue to bring this project to life!
